What is Bioidentical Skincare?

Bioidentical skincare is about beauty in the long term. Using vitamins and nutrients that are naturally found in our skin, we can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improve how our skin feels, and improve our overall natural glow. What makes bioidentical skincare stand out from other skincare technologies is it’s focus on providing skin with nutrients that are naturally common across all skin types. Some skin care products contain exotic ingredients that plump and mask, but these “fast acting” ingredients are usually too irritating and cause too much photo-sensitivity for everyday use. Bioidentical ingredients are perfect for everyday use and for people with normal or sensitive skin because they complement the nutrients naturally found in our skin.

Dermatologist Discovered

Dr. Janet Prystowsky realized the benefits of bioidentical skincare during her 15 years of vitamin research at Columbia University. She talked to us about why bioidentical ingredients are so important in skincare. “It is well known by dermatologists that a significant number of people will develop a skin allergy to vitamin E that is not bioidentical,” says Dr. Prystowsky. Allergies are a huge reason why people stop using certain products and brands all together. It’s amazing to think that using non-bioidentical ingredients could make that big of a difference.

Dr. Prystowsky went on to explain, “In laboratory experiments, subtle but real differences have been observed between vitamin D3 and D2.” She noted that vitamin D3 is the bioidentical version of vitamin D, whereas vitamin D2 is a widely-used, but less potent version. But what are the subtle differences between vitamin D3 and D2? Dr. Prystowsky says “studies continue to reveal vitamin D3’s anti-inflammatory and immune properties.” Research is still underway to find out how key a role vitamin D3 plays in our bodies and skin.

Bioidentical ingredients are great because they are easily recognized by your skin. Dr. Prystowsky says, “the skin benefits greatly from fat soluble vitamins because our skin cell membranes contain fat. This means that fat soluble vitamins like bioidentical A, D, and E are more readily absorbed into your skin than other vitamins.” Now, before you say that you don’t have fatty skin. It’s not what you think! Dr. Prystowsky is talking about the fat within our skin cell membranes, which is necessary and beneficial for our skin cells to function. Products with water soluble vitamins do not have the same benefits as fat soluble vitamins because water can’t mix with fat!

Natural Beauty

Bioidentical skincare is about discovering the nutrients that are found in naturally healthy, beautiful skin and using them to help others grow into their own beautiful skin. Vitamins and other nutrients come in many different forms, and some forms are better than others. Nutrient rich skincare is amazing and bioidentical nutrients are the next big step in natural beauty.
